Welcome to Living Water United Methodist Church Marion, Iowa

Our Missions and our People--how you can help:

God says “Those of us who are strong and able in the faith need to step in and lend a hand and not just do what is most convenient for us. Strength is for service, not status. Each one of us needs to look after the good of the people around us, asking ourselves, “How can I help?” Romans 15:1-2 (The Message)

Volunteers packing bags with food for children

Backpack - Feeding Children on Weekends

The Backpack Program starts with the school year. We pack bags of food once a month on Wednesdays for a child to take home on Friday so they have something to eat on the weekend. The schools give the bags to the children in their lockers. Thanks to Monette and Jane for coordinating this mission.

Little Free Pantry and Little Free Library

Living Water UMC started both a Little Free Pantry and Little Free Library in May 2018. Both pantries are open 24/7 in front of the church on the sidewalk. Stop by to browse the books (the Bibles are free) or pick up food items that you need. Thanks to Barb and Cheryl and others for coordinating these ministries.

Volunteers making sandwiches after services

Feeding the Homeless

Sandwiches on Sunday (SOS) occurs the Sunday before the second Monday of each month after church services. We make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for Green Square Meals to provide an additional quick meal for people in need. Thanks to all who have generously volunteered to make the sandwiches and those that have provided the peanut butter, jelly, bread, plastic bags and gloves needed for this ministry. Thanks also to Julie and others that have taken the sandwiches to Green Square Meals for distribution.

Volunteers bring food for the food pantry

Emergency Food Pantry

We maintain a food pantry in our church for those in need. We collect canned food, toiletries, and personal items. Church members bring food during church services the second Sunday of each month. Extra canned food is given to the Marion Food Pantry as needed. Thanks to Mark and Charisse for organizing our food pantry.

In Gathering

This year, we will be collecting supplies for School Kits and Hygiene Kits. Add $2 for each kit, plus an additional $1 is needed to buy toothpaste because it has a date code and is often outdated before it is used. Please call us for a list of the supplies needed for each. We also collect for Heifer International, Self-Help International's feeding program, and PET, the Church World Service blanket programs. Ingathering will be held on Saturday, November 3.  Thanks to Jan K. and Joyce for handling this mission.

Guatemala Mission

Since 2008, Living Water has been crossing geographical and cultural borders by sending a construction team each year to Guatemala to work with ODIM (Organization for the Development of the Indigenous Maya). The mission team works in the village of San Pablo La Laguna to build and repair houses for families in need. The teams work alongside a local crew of construction workers contracted by ODIM and family members of the home being built.  The mission team is blessed to have opportunities to learn about and be immersed in the local Maya culture. Listed below are the over the counter medicines that are collected before the trip to distribute to the two clinics in the area. Many thanks to Julie and Paul for their leadership in this mission.

Child Sponsorship, a boy named Gift

We collect quarters for our sponsored child in Malawi named Gift C.

Various Collections

We collect can tabs, Campbell labels, Pennies from Heaven, and Box Tops for Education for various special projects. These items can be brought to the church.

Used Wheelchair Ministry

We assist in collecting wheelchairs and other special devices (walkers, crutches and canes) for people who need them in other countries under the direction of the Joni and Friends Ministry. Many thanks to Jan L., who coordinates the ministry for Living Water UMC. Jan will be joining "Wheels for the World" team heading to Peru in October 2018 to deliver equipment. Your support is needed for equipment donations, money to ship the equipment and prayers for a successful mission. Visit http://www.joniandfriends.org/wheels-for-the-world/ for more information.

Samaritan's Purse - Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child is an international Christian relief organization organized by Franklin Graham's Samaritan's Purse that collects gift-filled shoeboxes and delivers them in the name of Jesus Christ to children living in desperate situations around the world. Every day, boys and girls worldwide suffer from war, poverty, disease, and natural disaster. Operation Christmas Child makes it possible for millions of these children to experience God's love through shoeboxes filled with gifts of school supplies, personal hygiene items, fun toys and notes of encouragement.   These shoeboxes open doors for presenting the Good News of Jesus Christ by working in and through local churches where possible, offering children's literature and through culturally appropriate evangelistic and follow-up programs. National Collection Week is November 19.
